Who was Billy the Kid and what did he do? William Henry McCarty Jr, A.K.A, Henry Antrim, A.K.A, William H. Bonney, A.K.A, Billy the Kid, A Scorpio Born in obscurity, however some think, the Big Apple. McCarty, (Kid) was orphaned at 15 and it is believed that this is when he started his career as an outlaw. As he grew up he developed quite a persona. Using a bit of frontier charm, Kid was the fancy of many a Cat house. Kid also had a violent streak to him, conducting many heists and robberies. Kid eventually befriended a rancher named John Tunstall in Lincoln County New Mexico, who Kid was very fond of and looked to him as a father figure. In his 20s he began working for various notable ranchers in Wyoming and Montana. He found himself in Sundance, in eastern Wyoming where he stole a horse, a gun, and a saddle. He was caught in alternately pled guilty and was sentenced to serve time the Sundance jail. In February 1889 Gov. Thomas Moonlight from Wyoming pardoned Longabough. (Interestingly enough, and through a bit of research, I found that Gov. Moonlight ended his service in Wyoming in April 1889, two months after he pardoned Longabaugh, but continued his government service as the minister to Bolivia for Pres. Cleveland until 1897. This will make sense once I get further into the exploits of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.) After his pardon, Longabough earned the nickname "Sundance kid". As Sundance continued to make a name for himself, and working in the area that he was, eventually was sure to cross paths with Butch Cassidy. One of these chance encounters was the robbery of the Great Northern Westbound #23 train near Malta Montana. This would eventually lead to the formation of the Gole in the Wall gang a.k.a. the "Wild Bunch". Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid along with their gang soon would become synonymous with bank, robberies, train robberies, and rustling. One of the things it would set them aside of other games of their time with their interesting use of their getaway horses. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid would often preplan there robberies by starting with their escape. They would go out days in advance and tie horses along their escape route, ensuring that they always had fresh horses while they're being pursued, leaving their pursuers with nags that couldn't keep up.
