With technology giving us many more ways to watch entertainment today, many TV views are binge-watching their favorite TV shows across many different types of platforms. For those who do not know, Binge-watching is where you watch multiple television shows or in some cases movies for hours and hours on end. Looking back into the past, many TV stations would air marathons of different types of TV shows in a single day. This eventually lead to consumers watching marathons of TV shows and movies on DVDs and around this time the term binge-watching came to be. Though binge-watching can be traced as far back as the early 1990s, it did not gain popularity until about 10 years ago, when Netflix and Hulu began offered online streaming of TV shows and movies. This was essentially the birth of the modern way of binge-watching. Nowadays more TV watchers are binge-watching more than ever. 61 percent of all Netflix users binge-watch shows at least every few weeks. Viewers are now turning to multiple online websites to access the shows they want. More and more TV watchers are cutting the cord and only using sites such as Netflix and Hulu. As Netflix subscriptions rise, there has been a drop in cable and satellite subscriptions in the last few years. The tv industry had one of its worst ad revenue levels in 2009, which was the beginning peak of Netflix’s success. (Ascharya) Watching too much TV at once may cause you to become more antisocial. The more antisocial a person becomes the more likely they are to become depressed. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin conducted a survey on over 300 millennials. Data in the survey showed that feelings of loneliness or depression were linked directly with binge-watching.
