Netflix is a popular online streaming site that allows individuals to watch movies and TV shows without any interruptions from commercials. According to Solis (2014, October 14), “29 million people worldwide have registered for the online streaming website.” College students, being part of that statistic, use this site, surpassing most people, in other words, binge watch. “People within the ages of 18-29 are more likely to binge watch sites like Netflix and Hulu” (Pollack, 2015, May 4). About “73% defined binge-watching as viewing two to six episodes of one TV show in a single sitting” (Piper, 2016, January 18). According to Chaudhary (2014, November 6), “excessive binge watching involves sacrificing the emotional resilience and feelings of sustained happiness that come with having positive social interactions.” Basically, Chaudhary is stating that when we binge watch episodes, like Friends or Grey’s Anatomy, we tend to sacrifice our social life in order to continue watching our shows. College students have this problem, and the worse part about it is that it is not helping them experience college in a positive way.
