In the paper, The Black Panther Platform: “What We Want, What We Believe” the militant civil rights organization, the Black Panthers, outline their goals. Ranging from communal self-governance to government entitlements, the group focuses on the issue of racism in the United States and places the weight of the problem on the shoulders of White capitalism. The group prescribes militant self-defense as the tool African-Americans can use to further their societal position. Prior to the Black Panthers, no mainstream civil rights organization set forth a doctrine of militancy as opposed to non-violent protest and civil disobedience. Black Panther Party was sort of political party which was founded in 1966 by two persons: Bobby Seale and Huey Newton (African-American political activists). In this documentary, Nelson has included the interviews of FBI agents and survived panthers. These interviews are revealing the facts about basic purpose of Black Panther Party (BPP), its cultural significance to American societies and its social and political impacts on life of all Americans especially African-Americans.
Discrimination against minority groups has always been common, but invisible to the general public. The book Policing Black Lives: State Violence in Canada from Slavery to the Present by Maynard, Robyn highlights the “state violence against black persons in Canada” (Maynard, 2017, P.3). The author demonstrates solid connections between the issues of slavery in the past and the effects on modern society. Minority groups, especially African Canadians, who has been historically exploited and have been treated as tools more so than human beings. The book demonstrate these kind of treatment through Institutionalized racism, Neoliberalism and Deviance.
In the article “The Black Panther Party: A Food Justice Story,” by Garett Broad spoke about how the Black Panthers were not known at all for being food activists. The Black Panthers were an organization that fought for civil rights movements, social movements, and the food movement as well. In the 1960’s the Black Panthers sought to fill in the gap of hunger and how the government neglected the needs of minorities. So, they worked to feed children with a program called “Free Breakfast for Children programs,” which feed twenty thousand school children in two years. They not only feed and cared about not leaving anyone hungry but also they started up conversations about capitalism and racism as that was the reality at the time.
The Black panther party founded in October of 1966 by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. The main purpose of this group was to fight white oppression after seeing many people suffer from police brutality. THey had chosen the name Black panthers because the black panther doesn’t strike first, “but if the aggressor strikes first, then he’ll attack.” the black panthers had a 10 point plan that had everything they wanted to change in society.
During the 1960s and 70s, America became a nation of issues and controversy. In fact, various groups of people attempted to identify the root problems within American society and the role of citizens in resolving them. During this time, the most prominent groups, still in existence today, were the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the Black Panther Party, and the United Farm Workers. In the following documents, there were numerous issues within American society that were discussed, however, one of the most common problems were centered around freedom. In addition, another reason for change comprised of self-reliance.
I noticed more themes of non-absolutism in the movie “Black Panther.” One example of non-absolutism is that the king of Wakanda has a council that helps the King make decisions. They are made up of elders from different tribes in Wakanda. The council advises the king and makes sure his decisions are good for Wakanda. The King has to listen to the council which shows it is not an absolute monarchy.

Was the Black Panther Party Significant? Well that's a very interesting question but in order to answer that you have to go all the way back to the beginning. In 1966 Bobby Seal and Huey Newton founded The Black Panther for self defense. Bobby Seale after his time in the Air Force decided to attend Merritt College, while he was there he joined their “Afro- American Association which was a group that promoted black voices and activist and it is their were he met Huey P Newton.
In watching the documentary of the Black Panther Party (movement) and how they were form to better the communities around them. The Government officials, FBI in particular infuriated to destroy them in light to keep power among the weaker individuals of society. The individuals happen to be of color (Blacks, Latinos, and Asians). I did however admire how the documentary portrayed black culture at that time. Despite the things that were occurring between law enforcement and the Black Panther party, blackness was promoted and people were proud to be black.
We can actually take it to something more recent. The Beyoncé half-time show at the Super Bowl, There is a lot of controversy dealing with the similarities of the Black Panthers and Beyoncé performance. What does it matter if she was giving a tribute to the black panthers? Most likely it was because she is black. I bring up race into this situation because years ago rock bands will have confederate flags hanging in the background while preforming.
The article “Do American cops have a race problem? Or a class problem?” written by Damon Linker in 2015, identifies why there seems to be a high number of African Americans being fatally shot. In just over seven months over 500 people have been killed at the hands of the police. To put all this into context in the United Kingdom the police have killed 52 people since the year 1900. The U.K. is not drastically less prone to violent crimes, however it is a much smaller country.
Consequently, their growing presence allowed women to occupy larger roles with less obvious opposition. While many continued the roles that they had flourished in previously, from running the Free Breakfast for Children program to providing health care through clinics, many expanded their efforts into previously inaccessible leadership positions. The Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet, Volume 1, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, provides a detailed exploration of the society of Wakanda, exposing its problems with the monarchy that governs it. Despite Wakanda being the most technologically advanced society, it has obvious domestic issues that haven’t been addressed. T'Challa, the king of Wakanda, faces backlash from his own people because they do not believe in his leadership. To address these issues, it is necessary to implement a representative democracy, where people have a say in the decision-making process. Limiting T’Challa's power would help cease the rebellion and promote peace in Wakanda.
Malcolm X once said “Early in life [he] had learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise.” The Black Panther Party lived by this quote. The party rose from the foundations of Malcolm X. The party was much different from other civil rights movements. They went by direct confrontation.
