How would you compare the leadership style of Black, Nardelli, Metzenbaum, and Shackleton? The Leadership Style of Black, Nardelli, and Shackleton appears similar as the three were entrepreneurial in their styles and they were also go-getters who achieved results at all cost. Black was able to turn around the various newspapers he acquired which was also similar to how Nardelli centralized Home Depot and introduced a lot of changes which led to growth in revenue. So also, was Shackleton who single-handedly raise funds for the Antartica expenditure which he approached with the creativity and verve of a determined entrepreneur. He tries at all cost to have controlling shares so he could have access to the funds in the company and also to be able to make decisions that will benefit him. For example, he took opportunity of the two-tier structure whereby one class of shares had ten times the votes of the other class and even though he owned only a relatively small and shrinking percentage of its equity, the multivoting right gave Black the power to solely control Hollinger. I think this should be addressed by removing this right; it appears unfair as Black himself had a small percentage of Hollinger’s equity. Ultimately Black was running the company as if business was entirely his even though there were other shareholders. He was only concerned about his own pockets and did not bother about the profitability of the company. If the two-tier system was not adopted in the company, he wouldn’t have had controlling power. Effective governance structure is essential in protecting corporations such as Hollinger from Chairman and CEOs who are involved in unethical behavior due to their positions in the company and also in order to protect the minority
