When writing a book, the Author uses different methods to try to develop their characters. They want to create a person that is relatable and interesting so people will want to read their story. There are many ways they do this, three of them being the way they write the character’s actions, choices, and thoughts. An author can make their character react and do things a certain way in order to show what kind of a person they are. For example, in the book Blue Skin of the Sea the author makes Aunty Pearl seem mischievous when she tricked Uncle Raz into thinking she was drunk when she got on the fish scale. Her actions showed that she has a playful side to her. In addition, the author can also cause the character make different decisions in order to develop them. In the book, the author says that many people came outside of their stores and homes to see Aunty Pearl when she was being driven around. She acted friendly by waving at all of them, which makes her character seem very kind. The book states that, “People who’d never seen Aunty Pearl before watched from a distance, amazed. Aunty Pearl smiled at everyone and waved.” This shows her kindness towards others, since she was not irritated by their staring. The people actually wanted to come and see her, which also shows that many wanted to come see this character. Finally, the author can cause the characters to think different things in order to develop the people that make up their story. In the book, Sonny thinks very highly of his Aunt Pearl. He believes that she is a descendent of Hawaiian Royalty, which lets the reader know that Aunty Pearl is actually very beautiful.
