A professor of history at Florida State , Darrin M. McMahon, in his New York Times article, “In Pursuit of Unhappiness”, (11-29-2005) he persuades that happiness is a relentless desire to achieve if you find it on your own. the article written by McMahon he quotes that ”Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness..”. He uses evidence to support his claim by using philosophers John Stuart mill and Carlyle quotes to prove that they all have similar views on how to achieve being happy and be cheerful. It's better to do something that makes you carefree rather than waiting for happiness to come “knocking at your door” as if you gain contentment as pure luck. Sometimes it is better to be bliss
In his article "In Pursuit of Happiness: Better Living from Plato to Prozac," Mark Kingwell describes how there has been many debates on the meaning of happiness for many years yet still a singular, justifiable definition eludes society. The pursuit to define and understand happiness has invited several debates, questions, arguments, and suggestions alike. In 1996, a hand full of genetic and behavioral studies suggest evidence that one’s achievable degree of happiness is genetically decided, with evidences showing that no achievement will change your happiness, you are either happy or you’re not. However, it can be categorized as being content with your place in life with what you are given. First, in order to know happiness, people have to experience countering emotions. “Happiness is being able to ride the wave of every emotion that life throws at you, knowing that you can come out the other side just a little better than what you were before because you have the skills (focus, courage, curiosity), the resources (a positive mindset), and the support structure (a community) to make that happen” stated Penny Locaso, author of “Hacking Happiness. ”Happiness is not just feeling excited and joyful 24/7, it’s more about being confident that everything happens for a reason and knowing that you are strong enough to overcome the bad things that may happen to you. Happiness is an emotion, which makes it subjective, so it is difficult to have a definite meaning for the word. Is happiness just the absence of a negative feeling or is it the feeling of fulfillment and joy? Depending on the person, the answer varies and different activities make different types of people happy. Furthermore, each individual is willing to sacrifice certain materials to bring them joy. Nevertheless, in general, as a society, people sacrifice certain things, like money and time, in order to “make them happy.”
The Websters Dictionary portrays or defines happiness as a state of content, satisfaction or euphoria. Happiness is something that cannot be forced or simulated and it is more that just a simple feeling or emotion. It is more than just a noun used in the vocabulary of the average third grade child. Happiness is an undescribable sentiment that anything can experience depending on that specific thing. It is natural and one of a kind.
Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics is a compilation of books, or scrolls, designed to be an all-encompassing work on ethical goals, and how they may be achieved. In the work, Aristotle lays out a position uncommon in ethics, which doesn’t directly take into account the moral standing or concern of others, but places emphasis on one’s own happiness, a position akin to egoism. This position is defended by Aristotle in his stating that happiness is the primary goal in life in the same way that victory is the end goal in strategy and healthfulness is the goal of practicing medicine. But what is happiness, and how might one achieve it?
First I will address the term happiness. I would like to argue that happiness is whatever you want it to be, either having good relations to others, having obscure measures of money or even being free, but I can not argue with the fact that happiness is controlled by chemical reactions in the brain that stimulate us into thinking we are happy. It is nothing more than simple biology.

During life everyone has desires that they are always going to motivate them to do better and accomplish all. In my opinion happiness is the achievement of our desires which give us the greatest satisfaction of all. However, many people do have different definition of happiness: psychologists connect and define happiness to emotions and feeling of satisfaction, economists define happiness in terms of wealth of an individual, etc. Though the travel to accomplish all desires may be rough and bumpy, when you finally accomplish all that is wanted you will find that the trip for pursuing your desires will make you happier than the actual accomplishment itself. Growing up I always saw my mother struggle she was a single parent that worked two
Happiness. Out of the eight basic emotions the human body consists of, happiness is the one that can lead you to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, metaphorically speaking. It is strived for in relationships, in successful endeavors or actions, or in taking up particular hobbies. Many scientists have claimed that happiness virtually plays an important role in human lives, however, the precise definition of this has been the controversial issue all around the world. Though it is hard to define what exactly happiness stands for, there are several factors which helps people achieve it. Happiness, as in psychology, is defined as the mental feeling which cannot be seen or even be measured. Moreover, it depends on each individual point of view, and while this factor is one’s sense of happy, that may not be other’s consideration of happiness.
For Aristotle, happiness is the end and purpose of human existence. To pursue happiness is to go for telos. Happiness is neither pleasure nor virtue, but an exercise of virtue. Happiness cannot be achieved until the end of one’s life. Hence, it is a goal not a temporary state.
