Bob Marley Reggae music can be described as a mixture of African and American R&B sounds. Bob Marley was a world renowned artist of Jamaican descent. Marley was the first Jamaican singer to receive international super stardom. At the time of Bob Marley's ascension, the Rastafarian movement was in full swing, trying to promote peace and stop the corruption within the Jamaican government. Marley is perceived to be the father of reggae music. His music reflected his political and religious beliefs as he collaborated reggae music and the freedom movement that was brewing. St Ann's parish was a small village in a mountainous rural area of Jamaica in which a little colony known as nine mile existed. He spent his early years there, then moved to Trench Town with his mom. By this point, his father was out his life. Growing up without his father had a great impact on his life, he wrote a song in which he touched on this topic. It is stated by his personalized biography page that in the late 1950's Marley moved to Trench Town which is a low income community in the capital of Jamaica (bobmarley.com). There he began his musical career. In 1963, Marley formed a band called the Wailing Wailers, at that point they were not very well known. The group soon split apart and he married a woman by the name of Rita Anderson in 1966. Soon after he migrated to the United States with his mother. He was called upon to serve in the draft around 1966. He Eventually left the United States and retired back to Jamaica, where he got his old band back together in the late 1960's early 1970's after adding two more members to the band. In 1967 his wife gave birth to their first child who was named after his mother. A year later, he helped to deliver is first son. Finally in 1972 Marley met with the founder of Island Records in London after working on a movie by Johnny Nash. The turning point came in 1975 when Bob and The Wailers performed with the Jackson Five and Stevie Wonder. His album No Woman No Cry made it to the top of the US and the UK charts. While his fame soon skyrocketed, the hate for him did as well. On December 3, 1976, an assassination attempt was made against his life. He was performing at a concert when a bullet grazed his chest and landed in his arm. His wife was shot in her head, and his manager in his body. Fortunately, these injuries were not
