Mormonism is a form of Christianity that holds Jesus Christ as the center of their faith and head of their church. Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They believe that the Bible is the word of God and came from the writings of the holy men of God as they were moved upon by the Holy Ghost. Their faith values an additional Holy Scripture called The Book of Mormon which supports and dignifies the Bible. Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon is another witness that Jesus Christ lived. It is a collection of writings of God’s prophets and record keepers. Jesus Christ’s life and teachings are the guide to peace in this life and joy in eternity. The gospel of Jesus Christ blesses all who accept and live it. God reveals his gospel through the use of prophets such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses. The Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ states, “Prophets teach us about God and are special witnesses of Jesus Christ, receive revelation or direction from the Lord, and teach the gospel to the world and interpret the word of God (4).” Prophets receive the priesthood and act in the name of God to lead his children. People who choose to follow the prophets obtain the blessings that God has promised. Those who reject the gospel and God’s prophets lose those blessings and distance themselves from God. The plan of Salvation is God’s plan for the happiness of His children and is centered on the Atonement of Jesus Christ. They believe that you are made up of a spirit body and a physical body. God created your spirit and you lived with him as a spirit before you were born on earth. Throughout pre-earth life you are taught the principles of the commandments, the plan of salvation, and that through Jesus Christ you would be able to overcome the effects of poor choices. God gave you agency or the power to make choices. He let you choose whether to follow His plan. Mormons believe that Satan was one of God’s spirit children who rebelled against God and did not accept His plan. Satan and his followers were not allowed to be born on Earth and tempt God’s children to do things that bring unhappiness and do not please God. They accept that because of our choice to have faith in Jesus and follow God’s plan we were born on earth and by making these same choices we can find peace and be able to return to live with God after life is over.
