Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld, tells the story of a girl named Tally Youngblood who is only several weeks away from having a life-changing surgery completed; the people that undergo the operation have their faces and bodies modified to look conventionally attractive. It’s revealed later in the book--by former members of the “Pretty Committee”--that the surgeons alter the patient’s personality and reasoning as well. At the very beginning of Part, I there read a quote from Yang Yuan, taken from the New York Times; “Is it not good to make society full of beautiful people?” Westerfeld’s story explores the implications of a society where people are socially conditioned and made to think that they are naturally ugly; at the age of 16, they are made “pretty”, as stated earlier.

Imagine a dystopian future where brainwashed people are made to believe in a biological standard of beauty. Imagine another world where the events of World War One have been altered to include fabricated beasts and steampunk-like machines. Scott Westerfeld has created these worlds with his distinct style. His style is clearly evident in Uglies and Leviathan.. Westerfeld’s style is made up mainly of simile, imagery, and characterization through a character’s thoughts.
Teens can greatly relate to this because school is a place where they are all expected to be in the same boat, with all the same grades, and the all the same things we
‘Uglies’ by Scott Westerfeld, explores the theme of appearance, exemplified through the main character, Tally Youngblood and the setting of Uglyville. Tally is just another fifteen year old ugly, waiting for the day she turns sixteen. She lives in Uglyville, in a dorm shared with all the uglies aged from twelve to sixteen. Once Tally’s birthday comes, she will finally be able to get her surgery, to become pretty. Once her procedure is done, her new, pretty life awaits her in New Pretty Town.
In today’s society, teenagers are thought to be lazy and unmotivated. However, that is not the truth. There are many examples in the text that represent grit and determination in characters such as Tally Youngblood. Uglies is a dystopian type novel set in the future, written by Scott Westerfeld. It features an about to be sixteen year old girl, named Tally Youngblood.
Scott Westerfeld was born in Texas in 1963. He lives with his wife, Justine Larbalestier, who is also a writer. He has written five science fiction novels for adults and three sets of books for young adults. In the novel Uglies, the theme for the book is beauty comes from within, not the outside. Teenagers need to have love and support. Teens need something solid to stand on. Love and support are necessary because teens need someone by their side to give them those little boosts that help them through their early lives. Teens need to be supported and loved so they grow up being a nice and friendly person. Teens also need limits to help guide them throughout their early lives, if their parents dont, teens can end up like bob.
The Anatomical Makeup of an Outcast In this Mean Girls meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower tale, Anatomy of a Misfit by Andrea Portes is a touching yet heart-breaking coming of age novel that teaches adolescents to except everyone and to follow their heart- no matter who it goes against. This book is written in the main character’s point of view- a fifteen year-old female named Anika Dragomir, and follows her through her sophomore year.
In my novel, “Uglies” the protagonist is Tally. Near the beginning of the story she shares her desperate wants of being a pretty, and even more so because she feels all alone without her best friend. She even breaks one of the most important rules, which is to stay inside Uglyville, but she can’t help her desire to see Peris again. Fortunately she didn’t get caught The antagonists in my novel, is a group called Special Circumstances.
Most people consider adolescence as a peaceful time period in life but that is far from the truth. Adam Bagdasarian’s short story “Popularity” is about a boy who struggles to fit in and all he wants to be is popular. “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde is a short story about a girl who has multiple insecurities while dealing with them alone. “Going Steady” by Adam Bagdasarian is a short story about a boy who struggles to express his real feelings when in a romantic relationship. Adolescence is a time full of fights and no one can escape its pain because the fight for popularity and feeling insecure, while feeling alone can often be challenging for teens.
“The Outsiders” is a novel with numerous notable themes that are relatable and narrates a despairing story about two divided groups of teens and how they need to put aside their contrasting ways of living before it's too late. Adolescents today can associate with “The Outsiders” topics of empathy, stereotypes and preserving childhood innocence the most. First of all, teens today can identify
Imagine living in a world where when you turn sixteen you have to change completely? Scott Westerfeld’s, the author of the book Uglies, purpose of writing the story is to teach us that no one needs to change in order to feel like they belong. Scott Westerfeld, I wonder how you came up with the world in which the characters live? I wonder if you were ever made fun of for being ugly? I wonder if you think our world will become this?
So, which horror movie villain’s costume is scariest? Can there ever be an objective answer to this? Some find clowns like Pennywise from Stephen King’s It to be frightening. Others get the creeps from slow-shuffling zombies, closing in on their next meal of human flesh and organs.
