Scott Westerfeld was born in Texas in 1963. He lives with his wife, Justine Larbalestier, who is also a writer. He has written five science fiction novels for adults and three sets of books for young adults. In the novel Uglies, the theme for the book is beauty comes from within, not the outside. On pages 78-79, “I’m serious, Tally,” Shay said once they were out of the water. Your nose isn’t ugly. I like your eyes too.” “My eyes? Now you’re totally crazy! They’re way too close together.” “Who says?” “Biology says.” And on page 79, “Were not freaks, Tally. We’re all in the same place. But on page 264, David is trying to tell her the same thing, “You really think I’m beautiful.” “Yes. What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful.” David is also trying to tell Tally that everything about her on the inside is beautiful and that it doesn’t matter what she looks like on the outside. So to conclude, this is some of the evidence that represents the theme of the novel, so it shows us that beauty isn’t all on the body and face, but on the inside. Beauty comes from within, not the outside. Uglies takes place three hundred years into the future where the world is separated into the pretties and the uglies. Those who have had the surgery live in New Pretty Town, but those who do not live in Uglyville. to summarize it all, it is set in a future post-scarcity dystopian world where everyone is considered ugly. they are then turned pretty through a massive operation. near the railroad tracks, in a remote location in the wilderness, is the smoke. the smoke was created when people started to figure out the secret of the operations. Tally Youngblood is one of our main protagonists in Uglies. She is a 16-year-old girl who has frizzy hair, blemished skin, and eyes that are too close together. Her personality is one of intelligence, but insecure. Shay, along with Tally, is 16 and has dark hair in pigtails, and her eyes wide apart.
