Underground to Canada is a book about a slave girl by the name of Julilly who lives with her mother Mammy Sally who told Julilly about a place called Canada and that there, everyone is free. They live in the Massa Henson Plantation, Virginia. One day a slave trader named Sims comes and buys some of the slave children including Julilly. He also bought 3 slave men by the names of Adam, Ben, and Lester. He put them into a wagon and they travelled south for days until they arrive to a different plantation called the Riley plantation. It was totally different from Massa Hensens. When Julilly got to her cabin there were lots of other kids her age but only one girl came out of the crowd. One day a man from canada came to the plantation and said to Sims that he was a bird watcher and he needs some of their slaves to guide him. Sims said that he could give up 2 of his slaves. The 2 slaves he chose were Lester and Adam. They were away for a while until lester comes to Julilly and Liza and tells them that that man’s name is Mr Ross and that he came to help some of us escape to Canada! He also said to meet him at midnight for a secret meeting. Julilly and Liza came to the meeting and Mr Ross told Julilly, Liza, Lester, Adam, and Ben to meet him in tennessee but they would have to travel through the swamps so that the dogs and slave catchers wont find them. They would also have to dress as boys and cut their hair so that no one thinks they are the runaway slaves. Also he said that if he is not there, another man will take you to the next place you need to go but you have to tell him the secret password “a friend with friends” so that he knows it’s you. Suddenly some horses with men on them arrived and captured Lester and Adam! They were the slave catchers! Julilly and Liza were frozen in fear. They didn’t even breath until they were gone! Julilly was very sad but they had to move on. They headed up north. Climbing up big hills and steep cliffs until they found a house in the middle of nowhere. Julilly got out the money and knocked on the door. A white woman opens the door and let’s Julilly and Liza in. the woman gives them a bath and serves them some food. The two stayed at that house for a couple days until they had to go. The woman gave them some food on the go and some new clothes and they left. They travelled a few more days until a man with a dog comes and tells them about a man named Jeb Brown. He lives beside the ohio river and he will help them escape. So Julilly and Liza walk until they see Jeb Brown's house. They knock on the door and a man shows up at the door. He takes them into the house and gives them some food. Suddenly they hear some horses and a woman hides the 2 slaves on the roof of the house. A man named Sheriff Starkey comes into the house and asks Jeb if there are any slaves in the house.
