The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander, is a novel written in verse. It follows a Middle-schooler named Josh, as he goes through problems such as his father’s health problems and his brother’s girlfriend. In the book, Josh realizes that family is one of the most important things in life and that when things go wrong, keep going. The author of The Crossover, Kwame Alexander uses poetic structures, like enjambment and dialogue, to show the themes that family is one of the most important things and to keep going (respectively).

A Child Called “It” is a memoir written by Dave Pelzer about his abusive childhood and how he managed to escape the hands of his mother. Pelzer wrote this book so that he could share his story and to also address the ongoing issue of child abuse. Throughout the majority of his childhood Pelzer was severely abused by his alcoholic and mentally sick mother. Social services deemed Pelzer’s abuse the most horrendous and gruesome of all such cases reported by that time in California.
When his father would step in Dave’s mother became worse with her actions and words. Dave’s father was stripped of his right to be a father and an authority figure. Dave state that his father once told him, “…Damn it boy, we don’t need anything that will make her more upset! I don’t need that tonight.” From this statement we are let to believe Dave’s father was emotionally worn out and knew that fighting and disagreeing with his wife accomplished nothing but more abuse from the mother towards himself and Dave.

In their mothers’ absence, children long for their care and support. This highlights the importance of a mother’s role in a child’s life. I have noted that Pelzer, a novelist, wrote great inspirational stories which each reader can have their own view or theory drawn from each moment. “A Child Called It” is a great book written by Pelzer which explains his younger years of his life. In the book he shows how even though his mother tried to overpower him, Pelzer learned he could not show his mother his moments of vulnerability. Mrs. Pelzer would take great advantage of the boy’s vulnerable moments that they cause a strong part of Dave to develop. Many people reading the book, “A Child Called It,” would be able to see the obvious advantages that vulnerability had cause in Pelzer’s life and in his well-known books.
A Child Called It is a book about a young boy who is viciously abused by his mother. He is around 6 and 7 and is treated worse than a rat. He could not play with his brothers, go outside, watch tv, or sleep in a bed. At one point he would have to sleep in the basement on the hard, cold cement and use newspaper as a cover. He was fed very little, to the point where he had to steal school food.
