The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls contains many themes throughout the entire book. Jeannette’s book is nonfiction and it is all about the struggles she faced growing up. Both of her parents struggled to keep a job because her father was an alcoholic and her mother was lazy. Because her parents could not hold jobs, they were unable to provide things for Jeannette and her siblings. As the kids were growing up and attending school, they were constantly digging through garbage cans to find food. While the kids were young, they did not really know any better so they never actually tried to talk to their parents about those things. My dad had plans to go skydiving and told me he wanted me to go with him after what had happened the night before. My dad called my mom in the morning to talk to her about what I had done to make sure she didn’t wake up freaking out because I wasn’t there. My mom didn’t answer her phone so my dad left a voicemail. It was around one-thirty in the afternoon and my dad, his friends, and myself were eating at a restaurant before we headed home. We had just ordered our food when my mom called my dad. She was freaking out, of course, but my dad stayed calm. They talked for awhile and when he got off the phone, he said, “Your mother said I can either bring you home right now or I’m calling the cops!” I told my dad to let her call the cops. He called her back, told her what I said, and they hung up. About ten minutes later, the cops were calling my dad. They really couldn’t do anything about it because I was sixteen and I was with my father. They told him they were really just calling to make sure I was safe, but they also told him that my mother was charging me with unruly and running away. Both charges would drop when I turned eighteen so we didn’t worry much about it. After all the phone calls were over with, we all enjoyed our meals and headed
