In the book “There Are No Children Here” written by Alex Kotlowitz, there is a passage where the main characters Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers mother LaJoe makes mention of Henry Horner Homes living conditions transformation over her thirty-one year residence. In this short passage, she is quoted as saying “When I got my apartment I thought this is what it was meant to be” (24). Her statement reflects how thirty-one years ago, she thought everything that was required for living a happy and fulfilling life was achieved. She believed that her luck had changed, and she was one of the few to have a life on the other side of the fence where the grass was greener. As a freshman in highschool, I had never heard of Jane Harper, or read any of her books before this. My English teacher challenged me to pick up a book and read it. Instantly, the cover caught my eye. The book looked like a very compelling novel, so I decided to read it. It just came out in September of 2016, so it is a very new book.
Joe’s rough start and the struggle he went through in his early years makes winning the Olympic gold medal in 1936 more meaningful and inspiring than it might have been otherwise. As a child of only 10 years, Joe faced many difficult hardships he thought would never end. From his mother dying, to being kicked out of his only home and being abandoned by his own father, he was very persistent to get what he wanted in life and to get where he wanted to be in life as well, which ultimately in exchange, led him and his meritable teammates to winning the Olympic gold medal. I find this story extraordinarily ironic due to the fact that Joe took himself and what he had, which was nothing, and made it and himself into something.
In the novel ‘Boy Overboard’ by Morris Gleitzman, when you get to be in perspective of Jamal, a young boy living in Afghanistan and the issues he faces as he struggles to get to Australia. In the beginning of the novel, Jamal meets a tank which leads him to think about this ancestors, "I remember what mum told me about her ancestors. Fierce, brave desert warriors, tall and proud in the saddles of their mighty Arab steeds. She also told me about dad 's ancestors, honest hard-working bakers, baking bread so that those fierce warriors had something to mop up their gravy." He says.

Outside Reading Project Across Disciplines-How did this story inform you about another subject? The book October Sky not only tells an intriguing story of a boy, his town, and rockets, it also informs the reader about how the rockets are built and what it takes to design and build each one. In the book, a group of boys that call themselves “the Rocket Boys” are building rockets; at first it is for sport and to see if they can do it, but it evolves into a source of pride for the town. This is to give the reader a better idea of what’s going on in the book, as it makes it easier for them to picture each scene.
In my sequel to the short story, "Boys and Girls," I chose to retell the same story but changed the narrating voice. This minute change was one that had to be made for the reader to comprehend the story fully. When given a story called Boys and Girls, you would expect to get a narration and description of the quality of life from both, a boy and a girl, but in the original, we never get to see things from the male’s perspective. The clarity it produces is why I made the decision to alter the voice as it paints a full picture and allows for the audience to see the glaring contrast between the genders. I have to admit when i first started reading this book i wasn't really attracted to it as i thought i would be. Although when i got a little more in depth with the book it actually started to intrigue me.
