As far as we are aware, The Book Thief will be centered around death, death can typically be symbolized by black, morbid, colors and images and death itself is generally symbolic of pain and suffering. The narrator in The Book Thief is Death, which suits the book as it was set during the holocaust, when people were dying to the point that, even if bombs were going off, there was an infestation of silence. In The Book Thief, perspective is important, and symbolism and perspective go hand in hand. But at the thought of death, a poem by Emily Dickinson comes to mind, and poses the thought, what if death isn't quite as ominous and foreboding as we believe it to be. Furthermore the poet, Emily Dickinson uses gentle language to describe death in Because I Could Not Stop For Death, an instance being “The Carriage held but just Ourselves”. This lighthearted language suggests a kinder idea of Death, one that drives a carriage instead of a hearse. Employing death as the commentator for this book makes sense, because death had its hands full during the holocaust, claiming over 11 million lives. And seeing this through the eyes of something who has seen it to the full extent provides an enlightening perspective. The perspective Death exhibits is unbiased and innocent, which is ironic due to the connotation of the word death, but because of his impartial views we will see a unique perspective of the story.
