Two bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon went off on April 13, 2015, resulting in the death of three people and causing injuries ranging in the hundreds.The men responsible for the incident? Two brothers born in the former soviet Republic of Kyrgyzstan who had been living in the United States for almost a decade, Dzhokhar, and Tamerlan Tsarnaev (“Boston Marathon Bombings-Facts & Summary”). Dzholaw,19, and Tsarnaev, 26, had acted alone in their act of terror but were believed to be motivated by radical Islamic beliefs (“Boston Marathon Bombings-Facts & Summary”).

For that, one must turn their attention to sociological criminology and science behind understanding criminal behavior. Although sociologists have examined criminal behavior and a wide variety of criminology theories have been theorized and spoken of, one criminological theory explains the brother’s motives most clearly the Differential Association Theory.
Developed by Edwin H. Sutherland a sociologist and professor at William Jewell college, the Different Association Theory states that crimes are committed by people whose criminal motives are based upon interaction with other criminals. Sutherland in his theory states that criminal behavior is learned. In addition, anyone regardless of their race or social class can be a criminal. Sutherland explained that through repeated exposure to criminal activity, individuals became influenced to change their ideals to reflect that of a criminal group. Groups are often very close knit and the individual in addition to learning how to commit crimes, begin to understand the motives behind a criminal group’s actions (“Differential Association Theory”). His defense lawyer, Judy Clarke made the argument that Tamerlan was the mastermind behind the whole ordeal, stating that Tamerlan was someone who did not take no for an answer (Ferran & Katersky). After their father had left the United States and moved to Russia not long before the event of the Boston Marathon, Tamerlan took on a bigger more “paternal role” in his brother’s life, disapproving of drinking or partying (Dzhokhar and Tamerlan A Profile of the Tsarnaev Brothers). The brother’s uncle stated that they had changed in recent years, especially Tamerlan.(Dzhokhar and Tamerlan A Profile of the Tsarnaev Brothers). "It was a different Tamerlan, seeing no purpose in life, but pursue the path of God. When I ask what is the path...he would say some kind of jihad."( qtd in Dzhokhar and Tamerlan A Profile of the Tsarnaev Brothers). He later went on to say that Dzhokhar was just a victim of his brother’s
