Arriving at Bowdoin almost three years ago, I did not have the slightest inclination as to where I wanted to spend time abroad or if I even wanted to explore that opportunity. Since then, I have heard about the wonderful experiences of Bowdoin students during their respective times abroad and I made the decision to expand my horizons and attempt to enrich my academic experience in a foreign setting. When deciding on a location to spend this next component of my undergraduate academic journey, I primarily sought after programs I felt were unique and could offer me a challenging but yet welcoming new experience. Often times growing up, I would be told about the wonders of the ocean from my uncle and grandfather who both dedicated their lives to the sea-faring lifestyle. This additional emotional connection with regards to the academic advantages already offered by the Semester at Sea program makes for a unique opportunity in which I knew I have to explore. During and after my time at sea, I believe I will gain a new perspective on my academic journey that I would not be able to achieve anywhere else. Upon completing my undergraduate education at Bowdoin, I hope to have had a four-year journey that I can look back upon and be proud of the risks I took to broaden my academic scope. Similar to years past, during my time in the Semester at Sea program I hope to take courses that do not necessarily fall in line with my strengths. To work on my academic weaknesses in eleven different foreign settings surrounded by people who have also made the commitment to explore the world as a supportive community will in retrospect be the highlight of my undergraduate academic
