Breastfeeding is healthiest for babies, and yet the United States has very low rates of breastfeeding. I personally think that the main reasons are the fact that a major portion of the population believe that nursing your child in public is taboo. A mother and child are not always in a place where privacy can be insured; and with so many people condemning breastfeeding as something that shouldn’t be done in the eye of the public; mothers are feeling more self-conscious about feeding their babies in public so they turn to formula feeding in order not to be oversexualize in public for feeding their child.
Secondly, the United States is a fast-paced country where women work as much as men do; and babies are often left in the care of baby sitters and daycare as both parents are breadwinners and often need to keep their jobs. In order to get back to work, numerous moms turn to formula feeding as it is easier for some to feed it to their babies as oppose to having to pump breastmilk every few hours. Perhaps more mothers would breastfeed their babies, if maternity leave was more than a few weeks. As a matter of fact, in some countries, maternity leaves extends well beyond 6months.
