Joy Harjo’s Amazing Life Joy Harjo didn’t grow up thinking she would write poetry for a living, but t she definitely makes a good writer. Her home life and her ancestry shaped the way she saw the world. It also transformed the way she wrote. All of her many works have revolved around her experiences in life. Either being it her experiences being a Native American, growing up on tribal grounds, or her father being an alcoholic and having a child at a young age. All of her writings revolve around her life. Joy Harjo doesn't have a perfect history. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 9th, 1951. She was the oldest of four other siblings. Her parents Allen and Wynema Foster were very young when she was born. Her mother was only nineteen years old. Her father was an alcoholic and her stepfather was very abusive. In this book she writes her early years in life. She recounts events in her childhood that shaped the way she saw the world and what she would become as an adult. In an interview about her book Crazy Brave, Joy states “And they were pretty intense test...I failed a lot of them, or you find a way around. And maybe there is no such thing as failure...that’s kind of what I’ve had to come to. Yes, I mean, there’s times… when we fail. But it’s a useful thing.” (“Joy Harjo’s ‘Crazy Brave’ Path To Finding Her Voice”) In this quote Joy is telling us how she overcame many obstacles in her life, but they brought her to this point and have made her a better written. She puts this passion in all of her amazing works. Joy Harjo had many writings. She had a very colorful background and because of this many of her writings are about this interesting history.
