The College of New Jersey is an institution that is located in the heart of Ewing, New Jersey. There are a little over 7,000 undergraduate students enrolled at the University. There are many different aspects to college life at TCNJ, and in this paper I will be going into detail on some of these aspects. In the beginning of “You May Ask Yourself” by Conley, Conley argues that “elite educational institutions are caught in a "balancing act" between trying to expand access to opportunities and reinforcing pre-existing inequalities.” This statement by Conley relates to the essay I will be writing due to the fact that the prompt is to develop an assertion that TCNJ either expands access to opportunities or reinforces pre existing inequalities. I mentioned the term previously, but the main observation observed in the first set of field notes was the material culture. As also previously mentioned, I decided to make my observations in the Brower Student Center, which is the social heart of campus. In this well established building, there are many aspects to the setting that help the college expand access to opportunities. First, we should discuss what material culture essentially is. The term coined “material culture” is essentially any physical aspect of society. This can come in a variety of ways, including objects, technology, rooms, desks, and so much more. In this case, the Brower Student Center had so much material culture to offer. In the popular building for students deemed the “stud”, there are tables, chairs, steps, a food court, a game room, and many other physical objects in this setting that are for students to use at their disposal.
