This short novel story by Jason Reynolds, and the main character William. I’m going to be discussing the challenges he encounters. To begin with, William is a 15 year old kid who lives in a bad and high crime city on the 8th floor of his apartment with his family. He has a strong bond with his older brother, named (“Shawn Holloman”) and he has his beloved Mother with him named (“Shari”). At the beginning of the novel, William is a loving and angry character. The novel introduces us to Williams older brother getting killed by a gang shooting drive by. As the scene in the novel said, “Will stands over dead brother, Shawn, Two holes in the chest. (Jason Reynolds 176). And it mind blows me that William's thoughts were really angry, as he found he was only seeking revenge and how he could get them back by shooting them back with a gun. At just a young age with all that pressure its just a big step to just shoot a person and william wouldn’t do it from my perspective. Committing murder takes courage and steps to do for a person, and its not a simple task to pull the trigger without all the regrets going back to your head, and it will haunt you for the rest of your life and all that weight that will be behind you. “In Long Way Down 179” tells us how he was scared by his mouth. “Dried out, words phlegm trapped in my throat like an allergic reaction to the thought of it all. This quote shows us how he was scared of it all and how it just isn't a funny game to just commit murder at such a young age. As William was holding the gun, his father (”Mikey”) took the gun from him and held it to his head. This was outrage that his own father was holding a gun in his own son's head and could take his life in seconds, but his father did all this for a reason: to teach William a lesson and to show him how it feels to become a
