Karen Russell uses epigraphs from The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock to organize her short story, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves.” The epigraphs provide short descriptions of how the humans running the school think the girls will develop at particular stages of the girls’ education. Each epigraph is followed by the memories of Claudette, the narrator of the story, who was a student at St. Lucy’s. Claudette’s development sometimes mirrors the stages described in the epigraphs, but often differs in significant ways. As a whole, the epigraphs do not reliably describe Claudette’s development.

This book was different from most books. Gretchen, the main woman character, started off as a girl. Nobody liked her except for her best friend, Katya, and it surprised me because she seemed to be very likeable. She might've came off as judge to males, but that’s because her previous boyfriend used her. The second part of the book was when she turned into a fly that was stuck in the boy’s locker room.
Julia Leslie Mrs. Ford ENG4U April 24, 2024 Echoes of Upbringing In Cedar Bowers’ book, Astra, the reader is immersed in Astra’s journey of life through the lens of multiple people who are important at certain points in her life. In the narrative, the debate between nurture and nature is an intricate concept as an individual begins to understand the character of Astra. While genetics are a big part of who she is, it is how she grew up and her experiences that crafted her identity. One’s upbringing shapes who they become in terms of personality traits, emotional intelligence, and relationships, as demonstrated by the character Astra. Astra has an intense personality, which is related to how she was raised without any support system.
A thrilling poem written by Carolyn Forche excites a reader by engaging him right from the first sentence, “What you have heard is true.”. Obviously, a reader has not heard anything, yet he is eager to listen to Carolyn’s voice on the paper from the first sentence. The title chosen conveys an image of the strong and determination character, which pre-defines the poem’s gist.
