Early childhood education chapter 5
Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
The author explains that multiple means of data collection must be used to identify students. Additionally, assessments tools used by educators must be reliable and valid. Furthermore, educators need to frequently gather data on students who are considered at risk several times per year in the areas of reading and math. The author further explains that a team of educators should identify evidence-based instructional strategies the general education teacher should apply before making a special education referral for services.
What other kinds of assessment measures will yield valuable information about his students? (This will depend on the “grade” you choose for Adrian.) a. If Adrian is teaching second grade, he could examine the students AR test scores, and then he will be able to look at how the students score on their AR tests. This will lead to him testing his student’s fluency.
The Smarter Balanced Assessment tool was put in place to see the progress of the school and the impact the teachers were having on the students. One of the main benefits is the fact that there is clear data to determine the impact the teacher is having on the student. If the teacher is doing a good job at explaining and teaching the material then the student’s scores should reflect it. The data gained from the test also helps the teachers realize what subject may be a problem area for his or her students.
-Describe how atypical development may impact on areas of development. The different aspects of children's development are interlinked and co-dependent, so they will each be important to the child's holistic development. Children's overall development and educational needs will be affected by the way in which they develop in key areas. As children grow and pass different milestones or key points, they will gradually become more independent and less reliant on those around them in preparation for the future.
Functional behavior assessment involves using several methods to determine the causal and maintaining factors for a behavior that lead to the development of the intervention strategies to meet the individualized and unique needs of the student (Killu,
Babies are born with an innate ability to learn and their brain to develop after birth. The neural pathways of a human’s brain are built based on their early experience in the world. A baby’s world is based on how they are treated by people in it therefore if the environment is scary then the baby will be reluctant to explore, as demonstrated n Bowlby’s and Ainsworth’s attachment theory. The brain and body become wired enough to understand what is safe and what should be feared. The birth to 3 years of a child’s life is a critical period for the brain during child development and any deprivation during this will result in persistent deficits in cognitive, emotional and even physical health.
1/10 Understanding how children and young people develop 1.1 Explain the sequence and rate of each aspect of development from birth - 19 years. The rate at which all children develop varies from child to child, however the sequence of development is very similar. The ways in which children and young people develop are measured are social, physical, intellectual, communication and emotional development (SPICE).
Then after, in the late 1800s, Henry Herbert Goddard, Psychologist, translated the Binet test from French to English. Originally, the tests were to measure basic knowledge of children in the United States to assist with support of mental health diagnosis. There has been debates in the history of psychology about Goddard argument on how adults with lows IQs shouldn’t reproduce. It is grateful that now, society see the viewpoints a lot differently. Today, there are different IQ tests that are used for different purposes and to help diagnose individual’s learning disabilities.
Furthermore, and individual administering the WISC-IV will need administrative experience pertaining to testing children with a unique and diverse backgrounds (Plake, 2005). The WISC-IV will provide a full scale IQ for the child. This number represents the child’s overall cognitive ability (Plake, 2005). Any individual taking the WISC-IV will be tested on four indexes. The four additional scores that can be obtained are the Verbal Comprehension Index, Perceptual Reasoning Index, Working Memory Index, and Processing Speed Index.
During this developmental interview, I chose to conduct an observation/interview study with my one of my cousin’s child. This child is a 4 year old girl and will be identified as “child K” in relation to her first name. Her parents had no problem letting me interview her, but I had them stay in the same room as us. The purpose of this interview was to observe the child’s physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development. I observed her behavior and gave her several tests to show how well she has progressed.
2:1 Compare the strengths and limitations of assessments of a range of assessment methods with reference to the needs of individual learners. Workplace Observations, question and answer/professional discussions, projects/assignments, portfolios, witness statements. A good assessor will always take into account their learners needs and what particular subject they are studying for prior to confirming with learner type of assessment method to be used. Workplace observations
These tests promised a way to identify kids who could go further in their education, while separating them from the kids who learned slower and would need extra help. The tests also came with the notion of academic tracking in order to steer students onto a career path deemed appropriate for them (Gershon, 2015). Attempting to measure a student’s intelligence through a standardized test is beyond absurd. All students learn at a different pace. This means that, even if a student may not know a skill at the time of the test, it doesn’t mean that they will never know it.
I incorporate this learned experience daily and learn through each success and discovered area of improvement. Addressing my students needs using a variety of assessment tools has been a beneficial practice to help guide instruction. Students have different learning styles and their strengths and weaknesses are not always apparent using the same methods of assessment. Utilizing formative, standards(goal)-based, anecdotal, observational and benchmarks has driven my instructional programs. The combination of different assessments provides me with a multi-dynamic perspective of my students allowing me to better understand their strengths, weakness and academic needs.
Developmental Milestones Developmental Milestones are a set of functional skills which most of the children can perform at a certain age. Every milestone has a certain age limit. Some may achieve it early and some may do it a bit late as every child is unique. Premature babies achieve these milestones slightly late as compared to their healthier counterparts. The three criteria are intellectual functioning, adaptive behavior, and educational performance. Intellectual functioning is usually measured by a test called an IQ test. In adaptive behavior, what a child can do compared to other children of their age, and in educational performance a child’s language development and communication; cognition and general knowledge is measured as well as their written language, reading and mathematics (Intellectual Disabilities FAQ, n.d). In my opinion both of the websites are valuable because they provide the definition of intellectual disabilities as well strategies for teachers and parents. They also provide signs and symptoms that can occur in children with intellectual disabilities.
