At 9:05 AM on Friday, November 2, 1820, Detective Irving Washington was summoned to the Sleepy Hollow churchyard to investigate the disappearance of one Ichabod Crane (victim); the local school teacher who was last seen on the night of Tuesday, October 31, 1820 leaving the home of Baltus Van Tassel around midnight after an abrupt discussion with Katrina Van Tassel. Upon searching the surrounding area of the churchyard, Detective Washington found a saddle belonging to Hans Van Ripper, a hat belonging to the victim and a shattered pumpkin as well as tracks of horses’ hoofs. Katrina Van Tassel, the last person to have talked to the victim before his disappearance. Mrs. Bones claimed that Mr. Crane was tutoring her in voice lessons and insisted on providing her with private lessons free of charge but that his lessons were at unusual hours of the day. She continued to say that he would on occasion try to flirt with her in a tender manner but she insisted she did not lead him on in any way. On the night in question, Mrs. Bones had to tell the victim that his persistent interest of her hand was not reciprocated and that her heart belonged to Mr. Bones. Detective Washington explained to Mrs. Bones that she was seen dressing provocatively and flirting with the victim and that he was the only one she had given all her attention to the night of his disappearance. Mrs. Bones denied any interests in the victim. The detective then questioned some of Mrs. Bones’s friends who stated that Mrs. Bones had been waiting for some time to be proposed to by Mr. Bones and that it was in her nature to make him jealous from time to time to get what she wanted. They were married shortly after the disappearance of Mr. Crane. Detective Washington established that although Mrs. Bones actions before the disappearance caused Mr. Bones to falsify his identity, she did not have any knowledge of his
