Insanity is a contagion that is hard to fight when surrounded by it. Insanity is a disease that Ricky Desmond catches when he is in the insane asylum. He does everything he can to stay away but he can’t. Ricky is put in the asylum to help with his anger issues, but it doesn’t help. He tries and tries to keep his sanity but it slowly slips away. The definition of insane is, “in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill.” Insanity is a mental illness that is caused by biological and environmental factors. In Ricky's case it is caused by the environmental factor. He has was placed in Brookline Insane Asylum to help him with his issues but it does the opposite. These illusions cause him to question his sanity even more. “He felt like his head had been sawed open and closed back up, but something had been left behind.” The knowledge that he once had, is slowly being taken away. Ricky is given hypnosis and it brainwashes him leaving behind his memories. This is another factor that causes his insanity. If this happened to any sane person they would start to lose their mind. He has a hard time recalling old memories, his favorite songs and movies, and his personality. He is not the same person that he once was and, there is no way of getting that back. Ricky realizes the grave matter but, it only makes it worse. “Take me out of here. They’re torturing me. Destroying me. I don’t even know who I am anymore. Ricky Desmond is disappearing. Get me out of here before he vanishes completely.” Ricky is trying to tell this to his mom this when she visits but the warden has put him under his spell. He has hypnotized Ricky to say what he wants to hear. Ricky now has no control of himself, words are bing put into his mouth, he can’t escape. The insanity is swallowing him whole.
