Brutus vs. Cassius Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare is a poetic drama based on a true story that took place in Rome. The Romans were very proud of their democracy, and they didn’t want to be ruled by kings any longer. When Caesar, a very powerful Roman, made it seem as though he was going to take the throne, a group of senators, including Cassius and Brutus, decided to assassinate him. Throughout the play, Brutus shows that his motivations towards killing Caesar were much more honorable and noble compared to Cassius’. Brutus shows his nobility when his intentions were for the greater good of the people, while Cassius shows he cared about power more than anything else. With this statement, Brutus conveys the importance of maintaining his honor and that it outweighs any fear he has of death. He gives his respect to the Romans and Rome, and he will do anything to protect them and the republic, even if it means killing one of his greatest friends. Brutus’s ideologies and morals cause him to be a very well liked and popular senator; it shows his selflessness and nobility. Cassius wants Caesar dead, but unlike Brutus it is not for the citizens of Rome but out of spite and jealousy he has for Caesar's growing power. While talking with Brutus, Cassius lists all the times Caesar had been weak in front of him, just to prove that Caesar was no god. He further explains how he feels when he says, “...Cassius is/A wretched creature, and must bend his body/If Caesar carelessly but nods on him,” (I.ii.115-17). This illustrates that Cassius completely and utterly resents the amount of power that Caesar holds.
