Humans are always searching for new and innovative energy sources. The emergence of electricity led to the mining of coal: the only known source of energy at the time. But the practice of coal mining had many problems. It led to many deaths. Usually, it was the coal miner that died. A unique case changed Americans perception of coal mining. The Buffalo Creek Disaster killed 123 people and left 4,000 people homeless (Stern). The reason the Buffalo Creek Disaster occurred was due to the accumulation of sludge in the mouth of the middle fork stream. The Lorado Coal Mining Company dumbed the sludge coming up from mine in the creek and the sludge functioned as a sort of dam. Since the sludge acted as a dam, the company didn’t think any problems would occur. As the sludge accumulated and the water built up the pressure became too much. The pressure from the water broke through the dam the sludge created. Black water filled the streets causing building to collapse, killing people in its wake. They both acted to spread awareness. The more facts people have on the situation the better they can educate themselves on the situation. Once they see the injustices in the practices that cause harm, then more people can stand against those who cause harm to the environment. Media is very effective way of getting the message out. It worked for those of the Buffalo Creek Disaster and it still works today. Some still go door to door today. But it is must more common to spread awareness on social media platforms. Using social media also ensures that not just those in your surrounding area or state hear your message but those all over the world can hear your message. The practices of spreading awareness are the same but the platforms on which to do so have increased
