The novel Dear Evan Hansen displays that bullying and social isolation is a large problem in our society as it can cause one to feel alone, lead one to go to desperate measures, or drive them to suicide Firstly, bullying and social isolation can cause somebody to feel alone. “I'm left with a loneliness so overpowering it threatens to seep from my eyes. I have no one. Unfortunately, that's not fantasy. That's all-natural, 100 percent organic, unprocessed, reality.” (pg 23) Evan frequently feels lonely. Given that his mother usually leaves him at home alone while she works, his father abandoned him when he was young, and he doesn't have many friends at school. “there's some comfort in sitting down and talking with another human being. You know, besides my mom, who's so busy with work and classes, she's barely ever around.” …show more content…

Finally, in some cases, bullying may drive somebody to suicide or suicidal thoughts. “Burning is the right way to paint it. You feel yourself getting so hot, day after day. Hotter and hotter. It gets to be too much. Even for stars. At some point they fizzle out or explode. Cease to be. But if you’re looking up at the sky, you don’t see it that way. You think those stars are still there. Some aren’t. Some are already gone. Long gone. I guess, now, so am I.” (pg 0) This quotation, which is a monologue by Conner after he kills himself, describes his feelings both before and after his death. This is at the start of the novel and is supposed to be a suicide note, but he never actually left one. “I looked up once more at the whole world; it was beautiful, I knew it was, but I wasn’t a part of it. I was never going to be a part of it.” Evan is coming to terms with the idea that he is about to die, and in this quote, just before attempting suicide, he believes that the world will be a better place without
