The study was designed to explore the direct and indirect links between child sexual abuse and cyberbullying, bullying, and mental health problems as well as to study maternal support as a potential protective factor. Teenagers involved in the Quebec Youths’ Romantic Relationships Survey completed measures assessing child sexual abuse and maternal support. Cyberbullying, bullying, and mental health problems (self-esteem, psychological distress, and suicidal thoughts) were evaluated 6 months later. Rates of cyberbullying in the past 6 months were twice as high in sexually abused teens compared to non-victims both for girls (33.47% vs. 17.75%) and boys (29.62% vs. 13.29%). A moderated mediated model showed partial effect of cyberbullying and bullying in the link between child sexual abuse and mental health. Maternal support acted as a protective factor in the study. In the first phase, focus groups were conducted to identify areas of youth concern and develop survey questions. Responses from 677 high school students on youth violence and risk and protective factors were used in this study. 56.1% had been victims of cyberbullying in the last year. Filipino and Samoan youth were more likely to report feeling badly about themselves as a result of cyberbullying. While cyberbullying and mental health problems varied by sex and ethnicity, they found that cyberbullying is widespread with serious potential consequences among Asian and Pacific Islander youth.
