Bullying can affect students in different ways, it can be the cause of many different mental health issues. “Bullying has detrimental effects on students’ health, well-being and learning.” (Ministry of Education, 2017) Research has found that bullying can have short term or long term impacts on victims which can take years to recover from. Teachers need to be able to help students to deal with bullying and provide them with the tools to respond to bullying and help them to recover.
Students who are victims to bullying can suffer from numerous problems. Students who experience physical abuse may receive injuries or embarrassment, this can lead to mental harm which will last longer than the injuries themselves. Some mental injuries and problems that can form in students

“Currently, it is estimated that school-based bullying prevention programs can decrease bullying by up to 25%” (McCallion & Feder, 2013) Despite this, students are still getting bullied on a constant basis and the long term effects can last even once the bullying stops. Teachers also need to be able to provide students with support and methods for dealing with bullies. “Students reported that the most helpful things teachers can do are: listen to the student, check in with them afterwards to see if the bullying stopped, and give the student advice (Davis & Nixon, 2010). Teachers need to be there for their students to help them deal with instances where bullying occurs. This prevents them from feeling isolated and gives them confidence that others care. Teachers need to clarify bullying behaviors to students when it occurs and why they are wrong so that they understand, this provides students with knowledge on bullying so that they know how it hurts victims.
