How media uses sport to promote itself-
This can be done through having dedicated channels for sport, Sky sports, BT sport and Euro sport. These are all examples of how they can be promoted to users who pay for the channels as they are interested. Over the last 20 years the promotion of sport has developed, instead of having sport on channels like BBC and ITV, they know that sport created lots of income. Which has meant they created the channels devoted to sport to the people interested, as its user friendly. Sky has changed the names of their channels from Sky sports 1-5 to things like Sky sports premier league and sky sports F1. This money attracts companies that are willing to sponsor these clubs/teams. They want to do this as they are aware lots of people will be attending and viewing the games, therefore they will see these advertisements. They often have many boards of advertisements showing the same thing, making sure that more people in the crowd and watching through televisions will see it. This may be because that brand/ company have paid more so their advert is seen more frequently. This would also enable the team to be able to pay for new and improved players, and improving their stadiums. The FA Cup is sponsored by Umbro and Budweiser. O2 sponsors the England rugby team. AVIVA sponsors the English Premiership Rugby League Sometimes stadiums are named after sponsors like the Ethiad where Manchester City play. Also there are billboards and posters of local companies or businesses. They recognise that having these advertisements will encourage the spectators to buy or use their services. Sponsorships have also lead to an increase in coverage for sports like Rugby Union, Rugby League and cricket. These sports use technology to improve the accuracy of the decisions made by officials. An example of this is Andy Murray. Who is viewed to be bad tempered and has an attitude. Meaning that lots of people from our country are pleased to see him lose. However with him winning the Olympic title, US Open and Wimbledon. This has portrayed him to look better than expected. Newspapers even spoke about him saying that he helps raise the profile of tennis in the UK. Another example is John Terry, who has great leadership skills. However there was a racism trial and he had an affair with his team mate’s partner. The media have presented him to be a bad role model.
In 1998 at the fixture between England and Argentina David Beckham was sent off with a red card for kicking a player on the opposing team. This was the most memorable part of the game. He reportedly received threats from fans, as they were disappointed with his conduct. Beckham was highly criticised by the media afterwards, as people felt that he had let himself and the rest of the team down.
Sometimes the things that sports stars tweet can be offensive and controversial, like Rio Ferdinand & Tom Daley. This causes them to get into trouble with their governing
