CNN Vs CBC Essay

There has been a shooting in Ottawa, Canada. The gunman, named Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, fired shots inside the Canadian parliament resulting in the death of one soldier and two injured police officers. The articles that I’m comparing are from two news agencies, CNN and CBC. CNN and CBC are two very different agencies since CNN has a more right wing point of view than CBC. Their biases are shown clearly when you read and compare the two articles because the article from CNN was phrased differently. It was obvious that they were trying to convince the reader that the reason for the shooting was solely because the gunman had a connection to Islam. CBC had a more fact-based approach and never mentioned the connection to his religion. CNN pushes their opinions on you straight away in the title. Instead of focusing on what happened, they immediately point out that the shooter is “reportedly a recent convert to Islam”. They are trying to sell their story by making the reader feel a sense of terror by using terms as “launched an attack” and describe it as a “hit-and-run”. Although it had a lot of important information, most people are just interested in what happened and not so much in a full analysis of the situation. If you take the length into consideration CNN’s article was better and more to the point. CBC also leaves out possibly important information about the gunman being a suspected convert to islam. The fact that he is a muslim might not have been the only reason why he did what he did but could be a factor. CBC purposefully leaves out this information to not stir anything up, but it could be important to the situation. The biggest difference between the articles is the opinion around the gunman’s religion. Both CNN and CBC have different ways of showing their bias in a relatively unnoticable
