The four plays: Cabaret, Peter and the Starcatcher, King Ubu, and Cincinnati's Free Press all share a similar theme of ambition. In Cabaret, Sally wants to be a star and sacrifices everything to be one, this includes her relationship and future with Cliff. At the end of the play, Cliff and Sally break up so that she can stay at the Kit Kat Klub and become a star. In Cincinnati’s Free Press Alina is an ambitious journalist whose ambitions lead her to become the mayor of Cincinnati. Alina’s ambition is shown throughout the play even though she gets threats to stop what she is doing and loses her father. Cabaret reflects who we are as a country in many different elements. Each character in this play can represent someone in modern day society. Sally and most of the people in the play see that there is an alarming change going on in the country but chose to ignore it. This reflects who are today as a country because we have become distracted with social media, materialistic gain, and our own lives that we are not focused on the major events that are happening in all over the world today. Most people in society today feel that ignorance is bliss but choosing not to acknowledge a problem does not mean that it is not there or that it will go away. Cliff represents people who are aware of what is going on and tries to protect himself and the people who he loves. In today’s society, Cliff would represent people who stay aware of current affairs in the world. These two characters alone show how even though Cabret takes place years ago the same issues are present in today’s society. Cincinnati's Free Press reflect who we are today as a country by showing female empowerment and how woman destroying gender roles and becoming whoever they want to be. Woman rights is not a new issue and Cincinnati’s Free Press shows what woman have accomplished in America. King Ubu reflects who we are as a country through our current leadership.
