Eli Zapata Ms. Troshinsky Honors World Literature 2 February 2023 The Legacy of August Around nine percent of the American population is born in August but most of them don’t know that it’s named after the great Augustus Caesar. Augustus ruled and commanded the roman empire from around 31 BC to 14 AD. He was known for establishing the Roman Empire, for bringing peace within Rome, and for his efforts to improve society.
"The Deeds of the Divine Augustus" was written in AD 14 by the ancient Roman Emperor Augustus. It was an autobiographical piece of literary work that lists the various deeds that Augustus performed throughout his reign as Emperor, but it was merely written so that the people of Rome would remember Augustus as a great leader who went out of his way in order to create a better society for Rome. Within the text Augustus utilizes the first person singular in which "I" mostly occurs at the beginning of every paragraph. He is making a clear analysis of his own accomplishments ranging from, raising an army, waged war, spared citizens, and first rejected an oppurtunity at dictatorship (paragraphs 1,3,5). Although it may seem that Augustus

The Res Gestae of Augustus is hardly what we would regard as a politician’s typical autobiography. Discuss how it is different: what does the emperor include, emphasize, and omit. What can we learn about his personality from this formal document? The Res Gestae or The Deeds of the Divine Augustus is an account of the life of the first Roman Emperor, Caesar Augustus.
Augustus Caesar Roman emperor Augustus once stated, “I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.”, meaning the emperor has taken credit to have brought the city wealth and prosperity once he arrived. Born on the 23rd of September, in 63 B.C.E., Augustus was originally named Gaius Octavious. He was soon known as “Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus”; Caesar was the first emperor of Rome, after the fall of the Roman republic.
Order was tossed away for anarchy and only force was right. The only man capable of becoming the leader needed was Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar initiated the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman empire through his leadership, military expertise, and innovations.
"O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?" Act II, Scene II of Romeo and Juliet. For centuries William Shakespeare has been influencing society. We perform his plays, quote his writings, analyze his sonnets.
Now he had found a way to reconstruct Roman society, which had been completely torn apart during the civil war, Rome saw Octavian as a hero, making it easy for him to manipulate his image. He was able to present himself not as a monarch, but as a man who had restored the Republic. Augustus called himself Princeps, as if he was nothing else but a first Senator, and combined governorships of all provinces with armies and left the remainder to the Senators. For them the normal career (cursus honorum) still existed. They could become quaestors, aediles, praetors, consuls, and pretend to be the men in charge of the Empire.
The role that strategic guidance serve in establishing a homeland security program is to create a common operating picture for government and agencies to follow. It is a means for the President and Congress to paint the picture of how they envision homeland security. This common operating picture help agencies to set priorities that align with strategic goals which also allows agency's departments to develop missions and programs. The strategic guidance needs to be clearly defined but at the same time broad enough to allow the various agencies to develop comprehensive programs that is specific to their unique capabilities. Not to mention that broad strategic guidance allows leadership some flexibility to adjust to changing environments or
While the first societies were built by man, the rules of every society since have have dictated the actions and beliefs of each individual. In the Roman Society presented in William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, Julius Caesar is on the verge of being crowned king, and some of his fellow Romans are none too pleased with this. Julius Caesar takes place in ancient Rome in 44 b.c. At this time, Rome was the center of a large empire, but their society had its fair share of problems. Their society gives much of the wealth and power to a select few people while many power-hungry men vie to be absolute leaders.
Augustus Caesar established the Roman Empire in 31 B.C.E. after inheriting the throne from his great-uncle, Julius Caesar. At the time of his rising to power Rome was in shambles due to multiple civil wars. In order to bring unification back to Rome, “Augustus allied with Marc Antony to reunify Rome by killing off most of its enemies in two of the bloodiest battles in the history of the Roman Empire” (Blackwell). Through many hard fought and costly battles Augustus never gave up however, and pushed his forces to keep on fighting.
In Roman comedy, like in Greek comedy that came before it, Roman writers enjoyed to poke fun at social norms. Augustus sought to protect the Roman Empire’s longevity and in doing so elevated the power held by the paterfamilias. In a Roman family absolute authority is held by the father or the head of the household. The power of the paterfamilias was unrestricted and enabled him as the head of the house to control every aspect in the lives of his family. Most dramatically the form of this power was exercised in vitae necisque potestas or his ability to sentence his family members to death.
The Renaissance era was noted to be an era of discoveries, wealth and great fortune. Most of Italy’s cities became wealthy through trade accessed through waterways around the country. The wealth of these merchants clearly influenced as well as supported new artist, writers, and philosophers. Among these wealthy merchant families was the Medici Family, whose wealth was in banking. During the early period of Renaissance Era the Medici Family’s wealth/contributions and support establish them as one of the most influential patrons of the arts/literature and intellectual learning.
In William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, Marc Antony appears to be a strong advocate for Julius Caesar’s triumphs and increasing power. However, like Caesar, Antony is extremely manipulative and powerful. After Caesar’s death, Antony manipulated the conspirators into believing he was on their side before requesting to speak at Caesar’s funeral. While Brutus and the conspirators remained fooled by Antony’s innocence, Antony took the initiative to inform the Roman citizens of the conspirator’s horrendous actions towards their beloved leader, Julius Caesar. Caesar’s funeral was a time of reflection for the citizens of Rome, as Marc Antony caused them to question their allegiance to Brutus.
Augustus was only 17 year old when he had a positive relationship with the Senate because Augustus wanted to raise the tone of the Senate, reduce, its numbers, restore its former dignity, increase responsibility of its members and improve its efficiency. This relationship with the Senate remained for the rest of the Julio- Claudian Dynasty. Thus shows that Augustus had a positive relationship with the Senate. One of Augustus main aims was to reduce the size of the Principate he would work with, Augustus had reduced its numbers from 1000 and 800 in 23BC and then 600 in 27BC, and then 400 in 18BC by removing disreputable members who entered the Senate prior to Augustus through bribery or influence. Augustus laid down a monetary qualification of one million sesterces and added worthy men from the equestrian class.
