General Description and Role The International Council for Nurses (ICN) defines nursing as “encompassing autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings” (Car-Hill & Currie, 2012). Nurses also help promote health and wellness as well as how to prevent illness and how to care for the ill, disabled, and dying people (Car-Hill & Currie, 2012). The sense of caring helps nurses to improve the quality of life of individuals (“What Do You Know about Nurses and Their Services, 2010”). P. Xiong said that the sense of helping others and seeing improvements in their lives gives her a refreshing feeling every time (personal communication, September 28, 2014). She knows that she is doing something good for a good cause. However, nurses cannot prescribe medications or provide medical treatments to patients (“What Do You Know about Nurses and Their Services, 2010”).

To obtain the license, you must complete an application package and send it to the BRN six to eight weeks before graduation. You must have the community college or university you are attending to send your transcripts to the BRN and complete a fingerprint and background check. You must pass the National and Council Licensing Examination (NLEX), which is computerized and given continuously six days for a week (“Steps to Become a California Registered Nurse, n.d.”). Majority of registered nurses obtain their license the same year they graduate (“The Registered Nurse Population”,
