Peter Cooper: Having been convinced that the proposed Baltimore and Ohio Railroad would drive up prices for land in Maryland, Cooper used his profits to buy three-thousand acres of land there in 1828 and began to develop them, draining swampland and flattening hills, during this, he discovered iron ore on his land. Seeing the B&O as a natural market for iron rails to be made from his ore, he founded the Canton Iron Works in Baltimore, and when the railroad developed technical problems, he put together the Tom Thumb steam locomotive for them in 1830 from various old parts, including musket barrels, and some small scale steam engines he had messed with back in New York. The engine was a huge success, prompting investors to buy stock in B&O, and enabled the company to buy Cooper 's iron rails, making him his first fortune.

As a result, the Dominion of Canada began manufacturing the Canadian Pacific Railway, which stretched from the Atlantic coast all the way across the continent to the Pacific. The Effect of Trains on America During the 1800’s Trains originated in Britain, invented by a man named George Stephenson. Engines and tracks were originally purchased from England, up until the civil war. At first, there were skeptics about trains, people who worried about their businesses, and people who believed trains to be sacrilegious. Eventually, the economic advantages of trains silenced the critics, and entered America into a new state of development.
The Transcontinental Railroad The completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad was an important event in the United States history. There were many challenges in building it, but after it was finished, it connected the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast. The railroad took three whole years to build, with the help of two railroad companies and thousands of other hired workers.
After one whole day in Chicago, I am so amazed at how much I experienced and learned while at Pullman Historical District and the Oriental Institute. Partaking in the History field trip to Chicago was one of the best decisions I have ever made while at college, and would recommend it to anyone who is either taking a history class or looking to learn more about Pullman and the Oriental Institute. The city of Pullman gets very little recognition, but contains a lot of History while the Oriental institute holds a plethora of artifacts of ancient history. The Pullman Railroad Center, created by George Pullman, was a community built in the eyes of perfection.
There was an interactive exhibit where you could push certain buttons with labels on them and a video would talk about whichever topic you picked. During the tour I wasn’t able to read the letter that was written that started the boycott because it was dark and I was hoping they would have it displayed somewhere else and they did so I was pleased with that. I thought that the documents that were displayed were interesting.

However, since the early 1780s until the early 1800s, American museums were established by the upper class for the spiritual growth of citizens. They wanted to utilize ‘Education’ by a means of control of the working class in pursuing their own benefits and ideals, and they tried to employ them as an institute to educate the virtues that society required. Thus, they offered and supported the exhibition or collecting of the museum, the operation of programs, and the education about the nature of art and the natural history.
