Nobody wants to find themselves stuck in a dead end job, especially when they have worked so hard and have dreams of doing so much more. The article, Can Nice Guys Finish First by Jeffrey Pfeffer is about an average man named Adam Baker that is capable of so much more than being just average yet he seems to be holding back. Adam Baker is a guy that everyone knows, because of how approachable he is. Adam was especially proud of his education, graduating at the top of his class at North Carolina. When the most is said and done, there is a market of competition to be employed within interest. Within the article, we see a young, ambitious business graduate, Adam Baker. His education was very noticeable on a resume, qualifying him for most of any job he would like. After graduating, earning a spot on the board of trustees certifies his credibility as a responsible leader. Entertaining a crowd of people never fell short of socially seamless for Adam. These attributes are noticeably made to entertain the position of a CEO in a company. Adam is more than qualified for the lead job on the company’s new venture. The new project requires him to manage and account for a series of new hotels. Adams pros to start are that he is likable and approachable by being who he is which is a smart, loyal, and most importantly always present. He is smart, he received his MBA at North Carolina and was the youngest person to serve on the board of trustees. Adam was the first to know the hotel chain was up for sale at a reasonable price and that it has potential value. He is the one who created a need for this CEO job, this is the first SES has been in the hotel business so they aren’t hundred percent sure on what qualities the CEO needs. Adam found the health violations, labor issues, and back taxes in this project. He has but the hard work in and wanted to make this work from the beginning. The board is scared of adams young age, which I believe is a pro, because he has the energy and drive to make this project that he found work. Adams mentor and boss Merwyn who was the swing vote on whether Adam got the job, said that “this door is closed for you do to not being brutal”. The Webster dictionary definition that fits what Merwyn is saying, of brutal is, of very direct and accurate in a way that is harsh or unpleasant. I know being a CEO has its hard choices and decision, but harsh and unpleasant CEO doesn’t sound like a good businesses idea of a CEO.
