Issues Investigation – Can stem cells cure cancer?
Introduction
In 2017, an estimated number of 134,174 people in Australia were diagnosed of having a cancer (All cancers in Australia, 2017). This investigation will look through the effectiveness of stem cells in curing different disease specifically cancer. It will also discuss what is stem cell and cancer, how can stem cell cure cancer and the risks & benefits of using stem cell therapy. Cells, genes and mutations were related to this topic and it was discussed in our biology class.

• What is stem cell and cancer?

Stem cells are cell that can potentially develop as different types of cell in the body amid life and growth (National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2016) (Stem Cells , 2016) (Crosta, 2013). Stem cell serves as repairing system for the body and it can treat many kinds of diseases. According to a research, studying stem cells may help to explain serious health conditions such as birth defects and cancer (Stem Cells , 2016). Stem cells are used in human development research, drug development, and cell therapy. This type of stem cell is collected in advance and after the patient receive chemotherapy it will be returned (Leukaemia Foundation Australia, 2017). Figure 3 shows the process of autologous transplant process. Solid cancer such as breast cancer and lung cancer can be treated by this kind of transplant (BoneMarrow,mx, 2012) (WebMD, 2005-2017).
