For the Capstone Project, each group or individual is required to choose a topic and find information on it. The topic that I have chosen to focus on with my partner is the negative effects of social media. My hopes are to be able to improve my skills of understanding how social media can be a factor of negativity in one's life. Fortunately we have been able to find quite a bit of information on this topic. Through the information, we’ve concluded that social media effects include negative impacts on relationships, self confidence , and although most may not think so, one's ability to socialize. Relationships are important bonds in life that are based on mutual trust, compassion, and intimacy. When one comes in between that bond, then the other partner is immensely affected. It is considered cheating by most to come in between such a strong bond. Many studies conducted have shown that social media can be a leading factor to relationship issues. There’s physical bullying, mental bullying, emotional bullying, and much more. Social media is a cause of one of the most predominant forms of bullying of our generation, cyber bullying. Studies conducted have shown that 49.5% of students reported being the victims of bullying online and 33.7% reported committing bullying behavior online. Middle school children who were victims of cyberbullying were almost twice as likely to attempt suicide. This is absolutely horrific as it affects children as young as eleven or ten. The reason that cyberbullying falls under one of the worst categories of cyber bullying is because it, like everything else posted onto the internet, cannot be removed. Once something is put up on any social media site, even after being deleted, isn’t completely gone and that makes social media one of the most effective ways to spread gossip and rumors.
