What does one do when their ship is being taken over by Somali Pirates? Richard Phillips a captain of MV Maersk Alabama cargo ship experienced this question during the movie Captain Phillips made on October 11th, 2013 based on a real life experience in April of 2009. He was a captain for several years but on the voyage from Salalah, Oman to Mombasa, Kenya was a different experience for him. Richard Phillips was usually a shy guy but very prideful about his job. On this voyage, he showed many strong characteristics. Strong, courageous and brave were his character traits when his ship was being taken over.

Bravery means courageous behavior or character of one person or actions. There were a lot of times that the crew and Captain Phillips showed bravery but there was one big instance when Captain Phillips showed bravery to the top. When the Captain was being held hostage by himself on the lifeboat the pirates continually threatened to kill him, screamed at him to tell him to be quiet and pushed him around like he wasn't a human being. But, the Captain did not allow them to get to him and let them affect his ability to try to save himself. After being on the lifeboat for several hours and not being able to go to the bathroom, drink water or have fresh air the Captain took the situation into his own matters. There was a time that the Captain said he had to go to the bathroom knowing that he could possibly risk his life but he did it anyways. Captain Phillips went out and stood on the side of the lifeboat pretending to go to the bathroom but he knew his plan instead. When he saw the ships who came to try and help him he jumped into the water to try to get away. This was an example of bravery because the Captain potentially could be risking his own life by being killed, drowned or get sick. But instead, he tried to swim away knowing they probably catch him. The pirates took shots at the Captain several of times but that did not stop him from trying to swim away. This is a strong act of not only bravery but courage and
