Most heroes are determined and courageous. Frederick Douglass once said, “I remained firm...reaching new york without any interruption(SB 71).” Which meant that he was determined to spread the word to the world about slavery and no one could stop him from doing so. Also, another hero Odysseus showed determination and courage when he blinded the cyclops to get out of the cave. “We took the red hot stake and twisted it round and round like that in his eye(SB 33).”
In his book, The Lakota Way, Joseph M. Marshall III describes bravery as “Facing the possibility, and sometimes the probability, of death and great bodily harm as without a doubt one of the most daunting realities any human being can confront.” Bravery was essential to the survival of the early people of the Lakota Nation. It takes bravery even today to trek through life and to be successful. There are many ways for people to be brave today. Of the twelve Lakota virtues described by Marshall, bravery was most important in the survival of his people.
History is made from stories, stories that have been passed from generation to generation, eventually written down and recorded as a record. Most often History is written by the powerful, the victorious, and so facts can become twisted and history can grow to not truly reflect reality. In context, the winners of a game may justly say they won but intentionally leave out the penalties they took or the goals the other team scored. Courage is a word that has many examples and has a well rounded definition. Define being brave; it means to endure or face unpleasant conditions without showing fear. Being a coward is defined as being a person who lacks the courage to do or face unpleasant things.
