Hello, and welcome to my podcast. Today I will be reviewing and reflecting on an article in The Career Development Quarterly December 2016 volume 64, issue 4, pages 304-317. The title of this article is “Cultural Trailblazers: Exploring the Career Development of Latina First-Generation College Students” and it is written by Cassandra A. Storlie, S. Jeffrey Mostade, Deborah Duenyas.

Synopsis
In this article, the authors explored the challenging reasons and difficult career development experienced by Latinas who are also first-generation college students. Unfortunately , Latinas in the United states have an extremely low college graduation rate, obtain lower paying occupations, and face difficulty in culture and value-based struggles when trying to obtain an education or career. According to the authors only little focus has been given to Latinas in college, the reason being for the low number of educational attainment. For this specific survey, Ten Latinas who were first-generation college students were interviewed for an hour each. The interview consisted of questions that touched on life roles, challenges faced in the academic environment, cultural impact, impact that college causes the family and community, and the difficulties faced of being a Latina in college. Fitting in and redefined career development pathways were the two themes that were very noticeable in the interviews.
