What is your understanding of the social work profession?
My life experiences with professional social workers have been with individuals working in many different fields in various capacities. Despite coming from diverse backgrounds, those people all had one characteristic in common; humanitarianism. Social workers are compelled to serve others in an empathetic and encouraging way while facilitating positive changes in their clients lives. They are prepared for careers in countless places such as hospitals, homeless shelters, substance abuse treatment centers, behavioral health treatment facilities, community organizations, and non profit corporations. Just as the opportunities for places of employment are many, so are the job descriptions that social they may have. Social workers meet the needs of the people they serve, wherever and however necessary.
II. Career Goals
My interest in pursuing a Masters in Social Work began recently. Since moving from upstate New York to North Carolina two years ago, I have struggled with finding meaningful employment. Not that I had difficulty finding jobs but instead the jobs I qualified for did not fulfill my desire to help others directly.

I am an “ISTJ” (Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging), who are known for dependability, integrity, logical thinking, and a relentless sense of duty. I have a strong sense of family and serving my community. I generally take things quite seriously, which is balanced by my off-beat sense of humor. I try to find the good in any situation and focus on the positive. Social workers must have the ability to strictly adhere to a high moral standard and established codes of conduct. Professionalism, confidentiality, the ability to look at situations objectively to establish an appropriate plan of action is essential to the successful function of a social worker.
