3.5.2 Photographic recapture Photographs of every individual dog observed will be recorded in the selected streets of selected area on at least two occasions. This will generate data that will be used to estimate dog population using the formula below: N= Σ (Mn) / Σm (WHO-WSPA, 1990) Where: M = the number of dogs photographed each time and considered “marked”, that is, “observed”; m = the number of dogs recognised as being previously photographed i.e. “re-observed”; Σm = the summation of m to that point in time. n = the total number of dogs previously observed, i.e. each day’s observations (M) less those previously observed (m) would be added to each day; Mn = the product of each days M and n; Σ (Mn) = the summation of Mn to that point
