Background statement: Heritage Valley Medical Center has had a wonderful reputation for providing excellent health care services to their community. Initially, their community was 80% Caucasian, 40% African American, and 5% Hispanic. However, in the last 5 years, the population has changed to more minorities and the whites have moved out to the suburbs. This caused the Center’s occupancy rate to go down 40% because many of their traditional, more affluent, private-pay patients had left the neighborhood. To bring in revenue, they campaigned to bring in more Medicaid patients.
Arizona’s health care system is somewhat more complicated than that of other states. From 1972 to 1981, Arizona was the only state that had not accepted the federal Medicaid program. Instead, Arizona opted for their own system, where each county in the state was responsible for providing some measure of health care to the poor with their own money. The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) was set up by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) in 1981. AHCCCS was deemed to be “experimental” and was significantly different from the Medicaid system.
My role as a patient advisor with Kaiser Permanente began in 2010 after the birth of my daughter. I was induced and spent 6 days in the hospital and during that time my family and I experienced wide fluctuations in the level of care and communication provided by the various healthcare professionals attending to us. At the end of my stay, I shared my observations and perception of the labor & delivery and postpartum hospital experience with the department administrator and ombudsman. Upon providing my feedback I was impressed with the reception I received. My input was welcomed and embraced.
Based on your research, respond to the following: What was the name change for HCFA? It was renamed the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in July, 2001. What were the documented reasons for the change from HCFA to the organization’s current name?
There have been many instances of unauthorized viewing of medical records. Unauthorized viewing of patient records is a violation HIPAA. The HIPAA Privacy Rule requires that “protected health information should not be used or disclosed when it is not necessary to satisfy a particular purpose or carry out a function” (Health and Human Services.gov). The case study in which Joe, a staff member accessed medical information after he was allowed access to the hospital to change lightbulbs and the case study in which the daughter of a nurse accessed medical information as a result of the mother leaving the computer unlocked and unattended, are HIPAA violations (i.e both people accessed the medical information illegally). Joe was tasked with changing a lightbulb, but was curious about a patient he knew on a personal level, his neighbor.
Over the last few decades, managed health care has revolutionized the way medicaid beneficiaries treat essential healthcare services such as family planning and parenthood programs. In 2010, President Barrack Obama signed the health care reform into law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I should be considered for the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Scholarship because I have proved and accomplished more than what I thought I would be capable of in my education, I am passionate for the health industry, and I financially need to be to succeed. I will continue my education by pursuing my goal to become a Registered Nurse. I first considered Registered Nursing when I joined the Health Academy and realized how passionate I was to help others. Throughout my years in the Health Academy, my passion grew drastically. My summer of 2015 was dedicated to two internships; one being a Medical Assistant (200 hours) and another as a Physical Therapy Aide (80 hours).
Looking back at all the changes that our company Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee has gone through since I first started amazes me, especially when I hear the stories from those who have worked here longer than I have. One of my previous supervisors spoke about when she first started her job with our company and having to write everything using pen and paper with only two of them in the pre-authorization department. This department is where the doctor or hospital calls in and requests authorization for inpatient admission, twenty three hour observation, durable medical equipment or possibly home health visits from a nurse. When a call came in with multiple patients one would have to take all the other incoming calls until the other person

I am writing to express my interest in applying for the Sophomore of the Year Award for the University of New England. Through my experience as a second year student at the University of New England, I have always been determined to be a leader to and a supporter of my peers. Some qualities that show that I am worthy of the Sophomore of the Year Award includes: Leadership: While a student at UNE, I have dedicated most of my free time to the development of programs on campus such as UNE’s Crew Team, UNE’s Housing Staff as well as The USG Sophomore Class Representative. As a member of UNE’s Crew Team, I have encouraged 6 students who are only involved with one other club to join crew and stay active. Without a good amount of rowers, only a few of our 7 new boats would be filled.
