There are various scientific techniques when examining an ancient body. When Tollund man was first excavated in Denmark 1950, scientists were limited in the amount of analysis methods available. The first dating method used on Tollund man was pollen analysis, this scientific method would only bring a small time frame as to when he lived. Instead forensic scientists were prompted to use radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating is conducted by measuring the levels of radioactive isotope carbon-14 in Tollund man's body.

Harris was the original examiner of the X ray, and he could not conclude that the injury was intentional. He structures this argument through considering the history of mummy studies. He brings information from many different studies.
Through testing, the scientists and historians concluded that the skeleton most likely belonged to an indentured servant. “In short, indentured servants did any job the master demanded. And if they died before their term of service ended, their remains met with whatever fate their master chose. At times, masters “treated their dead servants like a waste product,” said Luckenbach.” (Walker,

On the contrary, scientist began to unearth new fossils in Asia and Africa, that were thought to be human ancestors that came hundreds of thousands of years old after Piltdown Man. They were found to be less human with small skulls, but without authorization to the Piltdown bones and efficient dating methods, they were all but ignored because they contraindicated Eoanthropus dawsonii. It was not until 1949, when the bones were discovered to be around a hundred thousand years old; with the application of newly discovered fluoride dating. Subsequently, they were fully analyzed in 1953 and exposed as a hoax. Scientist discovered that the jawbone indeed came from a female orangutan and was less than 100 years old.
In Northern Italy in1994, two hikers came across the frozen remains of an ancient human. British geneticist Bryan Sykes was called in to confirm that the remains were in fact of an ancient European. Unfortunately, the elements had worn away most of the DNA evidence. Only mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited only from the mother and is the most durable, remained. Few scientists but Sykes had ever used mitochondrial DNA because it was so newly discovered.
