There are various scientific techniques when examining an ancient body. When Tollund man was first excavated in Denmark 1950, scientists were limited in the amount of analysis methods available. The first dating method used on Tollund man was pollen analysis, this scientific method would only bring a small time frame as to when he lived. Instead forensic scientists were prompted to use radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating is conducted by measuring the levels of radioactive isotope carbon-14 in Tollund man's body. When an organism like the Tollund man dies it begins to decay which scientists are then able to measure the amount of carbon -14 emitted from the body to determine how long ago the organism died. This analysis would be the most common …show more content…
After the first successful analysis scientists were able to understand Tollund man lived between 2,200 - 2,400 years ago. This time frame was around the 5th century bc which was the early iron age. In addition radiocarbon dating and other physical examinations revealed that Tollund man was likely around 30-40 years old at the time of his death. Using radiocarbon dating scientists measure the carbon 14 remaining in his bone structure, however if the bone is exposed to high amounts of heat or radiation, it can affect the carbon contents making the results inaccurate. He was in good physical condition at the time of his death, suggesting he had access to well nourished foods and medicine. It was determined Tollund man had good dental health with no issues such as cavities or infections and his bones showed no signs of disease or …show more content…
However due to the scientists only conducting CT-scans on his head, they were limited in the information obtainable. It was initially discovered that Tollund man was placed in a sleeping position with his mouth and eyes closed. Though scientists theorise this was due to the religious practises it also represents a notable social class. Upon further investigation of the scans it was determined Tollund man had well-manicured hands and nails. This suggests that he was someone who did not perform manual labour or engage in activities that would have damaged his hands. In addition Tollund man's clothes were of high quality materials and detailed with unique patterns. Tollund man's burial composition further provides insight into his social status as he was placed in the bog in a sleeping position. His eyes and mouth were closed which was likely done by someone taking part in his
