Farmers in Tennessee were going through poverty and dealt with problems like soil erosion due to poor farming practices. Farms were damaged and farmers had nothing left but hope. To prevent further damage, The Tennessee Valley Authority or (TVA) was passed on May 18, 1933, by president FDR to develop the Tennessee valley and the Tennessee river which is called the Muscle Shoal. Since the conception of modern medicine in the dark ages, the human population has grown exponentially. Ironically enough the agricultural farming techniques have not grown at such a fast rate, leaving more than a billion of our fellow humans to starve. This semester I explored the topic of hunger and some sustainable options we could use to loosen its grip on the ‘bottom billion.’ Growing up in a community that was very conscious of our environmental impact, I find myself drawn to talk about the environmental problems we are currently facing. This interest lead me to open the Despommier article called, ‘The Rise of Vertical Farming.’
Unfortunately, in this day and age, humans often neglect the importance of protecting the habitat of species. This farm has the opportunity to promote and educate the public on the unique species that it is home to, as well as other species in the Okanagan region. I propose that moving forward the farm should focus on the wonderful educational opportunities their establishment provides and cultivate a new generation of eco-aware students. The farm currently has a board explaining the gestation period of wallabies, and the staff proved to be knowledgeable and friendly, should you ask them a question, but it has the ability to grow substantially. I envision a future where the farm hands out pamphlets on arrival, educating visitors on the species it holds, and well as a Red Listed species in the Okanagan.
