Radium Girls is a play inspired by true events. In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, making Madame Curie an international celebrity. Through radium, luminous watches began to take the world by storm. However, this storm hit a group of girls hard – the girls who painted the watches began to fall ill, resulting in fatalities. Worse yet, no one knew why the girls were dying.
In the poem “One,” Shawnee Kellie uses repetition as a device to emphasize the theme of empowerment. Through the use of repetition, Kellie discreetly offers power to subjects that aren’t typically considered powerful. In doing this, she adds an empowering undertone to each stanza. The young girl who stars in this poem often compares herself and showcases the insecurity and shame caused by her unfaithful boyfriend's actions.
Burned is a story about a sixteen year old Mormon girl named Pattyn trying to figure out her way through life. She was shy, self conscious, yet strong hearted. When thrown obstacles like an abusive father, a large family, and a sex crazy new boyfriend, she has to find out her way through the pain. The Cheetah Girls series was of the few Disney movie series that was considered a classic to little girls, pre-teens, and teenagers in the early 2000’s. The first movie premiered in 2003, and by 2008, there were three movies. Raven Symone, Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams, and Sabrina Bryan found themselves in the living rooms of families across America and while they expected to become role models for young girls, they did not know that their vocal habits would be passed on to their younger audience as well. The Cheetah Girls series are good good movies for children to watch, but they are not a good example of what to sound like.
